June is National Fruits and Vegetables month. It is the perfect time of year for us to be adding more healthy choices to our diets. The fruits and vegetables are plentiful and tastier at this time of the year and raw fruits can be refreshing. Summer is a great time to think healthier.
The benefits of fruits and vegetables are many. They contain needed fiber and essential vitamins and minerals, which help protect us against acute illness and even chronic diseases like heart disease and some cancers. Fruits and vegetables may be the answer for weight loss. They contain water and fiber which makes us feel fuller for a longer period of time. Fruits and vegetables contain calories, but less than some other foods and they are naturally low in fat content.
To prepare fruits and vegetables:
- It is best to eat in natural (raw) state as they contain the most nutrients that way
- Steamed vegetables lose some of their fiber and other nutrients
- Use low fat and low calorie dressings to spice up a green salad
- Whole fruits and vegetables are always healthier than dried or processed
